You Are What You Eat..... (and that applies to our 4 legged friends too!)
I’m quite sure it is not mere coincidence that over 80% of the dogs who come into our care with hyperactivity, neuroses, or aggression problems are being fed a particular brand of multicoloured dry pellets. When I raised the question with the multi-national manufacturer of this feed I received an evasive, far less than satisfactory response. Some people then mix this dry food with a canned dog food and the resulting mixture can be likened to feeding your dog rocket fuel! Often a ‘detox’ and change to a more natural diet is enough to see an improvement in the dog’s behaviour and general health. Some dogs have cast-iron constitutions and a stronger immune system than others, but would you want to take the risk of chronic health problems in your beloved pet?
When I did a course in Canine Nutrition the students had to analyse the ingredients in several popular dog foods. I was not surprised to find that this food came out rock bottom, and became the standing joke for the duration of the course.
Robert and I are passionate believers in feeding a natural, largely raw diet to our dogs who love their food and never have a ‘finicky feeder’ problem. We were therefore delighted to discover an outstanding producer of raw food practically on our doorstep.
Darling’s Real Dog Food is a small, ethical family-run business based in Wiltshire. Do take a look at their website, via the link below; we can absolutely recommend them, and endorse the benefits of feeding their food. Those of you who aren’t convinced should have a read of an exposé of the pet food companies (who are self-regulated), “Food Pets Die For: Shocking Facts About Pet Food” by Ann Martin. But be warned, it does not make good bedtime reading.
